Typical outdoor uses would include pathways, driveways, landscape feature highlights, fountains, swimming pools, etc.  The possibilities are endless!  They are also wonderful for indoor uses of all sorts, including crafts, jewelry, potted plants, fresh cut flower vases, and holiday decorations, to name a few.  Try them in a bowl next to your bathroom sink and do away with the need for a nightlight!

All glow in the dark products need two things: light so they can ‘charge’ and absence of light so you can see their GLOW.  If you have a project that can offer these two things, then you have found what you need to make your project amazing, with the help of GLOW Stones USA!

The following information will help you make your decision about what GLOW to purchase, how much to purchase, and provide installation information.  If you still have questions, call us at 801-872-4569 or send us an email. We're here to help!

If you are planning on enjoying them as you swim on a dark evening, or sit near the pool, they are sure to thrill and delight!   If you want to mark where your patio stops and starts, you'll love them!  Do you want your driveway to glow all night? Done!

Not sure if the lights around your house will interfere?  Lay out some of your chosen glow product, let it absorb some light, and then wait 'til dark. Easy! Make sure your eyes are adjusted to the darkness to enjoy the full glow. Glow Stones only require two things: light, and absence of light.  If you've got those two things, you're ready to bring the GLOW!

  • Multiply the width of one side, in feet, times the length of one side, in feet, of your driveway or space.  This is your needed square footage.

  • Divide your square feet by 16 (the level of coverage in the pictures above).  This is your needed pounds.

  • If you desire some or all of your areas to be more or less dense, figure accordingly.

  • Example: 20'x30' driveway = 600 sq. ft. divided by 16 = 600/16 = 38 lbs.

  • The picture above on the left is our size Medium GLOW Glass. 1 lb. = about 1100 pieces, so at this density of coverage, you will see about 65 pieces (about 1/3" each) in a 12" x 12" square. The 1" Classic Stones shown on the right will provide about 8 stones in a 12" x 12" square.

  • The light provided by glow in the dark products is ambient, so it does not affect your night vision.

  • All glow-in-the-dark products need darkness; competing light sources will diminish or obscure the glow, and the stones will instead begin to absorb light. They cannot compete with street lights, etc.

  • They are intended for use in the dark, although they are visible in dim-light situations for about the first hour, particularly if they have been exposed to sunlight. Strive for "absence of light" areas.

  • Our plastic and glass products will hold up to extremes of heat and cold.  GLOW Stones USA products are just as durable in the baking sun of Tucson, Arizona as they are in frigid Minnesota winters.

  • GLOW Stones USA products are purchased from manufacturers in China, as are products from most suppliers.  We are currently in the process of setting up manufacturing in the United States.  Stay tuned!  We’re very committed to making this happen.

  • CAUTION! These products are a CHOKING HAZARD for children under 3 years of age.  Please use extreme vigilance when children are around any small items.  Safety First!

Calculating Needed Quantities For Your Project:

The two pictures below represent the level of density used to calculate needed pounds of product for your project.

Installation on a Gravel Driveway/Path

Basic information on Concrete Installation by Product
  • For loose gravel driveways, the plastic products are best in most situations.  Most of the glass product is smaller and heavier, and therefore it will quickly work its way down under the gravel, where the lighter, larger plastic Stones and Cobbles will stay on top.  Some maintenance is needed to ensure the placement, as with any other loose aggregate finish.

  • The famous driveway is created using our 1” plastic Stones, spread loosely over the top of an existing gravel driveway.   Because the Stones are lighter, they tend to stay at the top.

  • Asphalt is an application that is not recommended because of the expanding nature of asphalt, and because it will need to be resurfaced regularly.

  • Concrete driveways offer a more permanent, maintenance-free solution and can be accomplished with any of the products.

All of our products will work in concrete.

  • Tumbled Glass & Hi-Tumbled glass ... The easiest product because you simply "seed" (toss/sprinkle) them over the top of your troweled concrete, re-trowel lightly to tamp them in, and you're done because they have no sharp edges.  Our GLOW Glass is safe for concrete retardants and muriatic acid uses and exposure. All our glass is actually a glass-ceramic, making it durable and less prone to expansion than glass.

  • Chips, glass… These Chips are small enough that some pieces are more like shavings.  Seed this over the concrete easily because they’re such a light product.  A sealant is a good idea because they won’t be deeply set into the concrete.  Choose high quality, non-yellowing sealants so it will not affect the light-absorbancy of your GLOW Stones.  Safe for a muriatic acid clean/power wash after the concrete dries.

  • Plastic Resin Stones in the Classic, Bead, Cobble, and River shapes. Safe for use in concrete, but not recommended for use with retardants, or around muriatic acids. These may mar the surface and affect the ability to absorb light and then GLOW. Plastic Chips have a shorter lifespan, which should be considered when setting in concrete.

  • Pigments, both the Powders and the Sand require special attention as these surface products are applied to concrete or any other surface. Pigments are not intended to be sprinkled on the wet concrete. The dry concrete should be sealed, the Pigment pre-mixed into a sealer or epoxy, applied to the concrete, and a final coat (minimum of one) applied over the mixed coat after drying.  Follow the specific instructions for your Pigment, included with your purchase.  Click here to preview the Instructions.

  • Below is a video that demonstrates a recommended process for polishing concrete with an embedded glass aggregate.

How Long Do They Last?
The products will demonstrate their glow-in-the-dark characteristics after about 5-10 minutes of light exposure.  With about 25 minutes to 2 hours of exposure to sunlight or any other light source, they will glow for about 10-12 hours of darkness.  Below is a chart that demonstrates the product's typical performance.  GLOW Stones USA products last about 20 years.

Always use caution when handling the pigments; both the powders and the sand. Any fine powder should be handled with caution, whether it glows or not! Use in a well ventilated area, do not inhale the product. These products should not be poured around children, infants, or pets.  Once the pigments are set in the epoxy of your choice, there will be no direct contact with the powders.

If installing glow products in an aquarium, pond, fish tank, etc. use normal cautionary methods. Rinse all products appropriately before placing into your water environment.  Again, this is a standard procedure for anything you would put into your tanks, etc.
